Why not simply give money to the Shelter directly?

The Grant County Animal Shelter is a department of the government of Grant County. By law, in Kentucky, any funds given to a county department must go into the County’s General Fund.

That means that dollars must then be distributed among County departments, which include roads, parks, etc., based on the County’s pre-determined budget. Confusing as it is, money given directly to the shelter cannot, by law, simply be spent by the Shelter.

That was one reason the Grant County Friends of the Shelter was created. Donated funds can be used to help save and comfort the unwanted animals.

Also, funds given directly to the Shelter, which, as explained, means given to Grant County, are not tax deductible. Funds given to the Grant County Friends of the Shelter, a 501(c) (3), are tax deductible.
